Description

Description:

Development at Kona Sports never stands still. Working with our racing team constantly shows us what we can do even better. What we have seen is i.a. that many competitions include different types of water and weather conditions during the same competition. This means that a SUP board designed for specific conditions will usually perform at a lower average speed in these competitions than a board designed to be more all-round.

Based on this, we wanted to investigate which conditions and types of water are the most difficult to create speed in. After lots of new tests and analysis, data emerged that gave us indications of what the most challenging conditions were. Here we saw e.g. all challenges with changing wind directions such as headwind, headwind and crosswind, breaking waves, shallow, warm, current and broken water - everything that contributes to instability, increased resistance and where the paddle blade loses grip.

The question that arose was, how can we create a SUP board that is optimized to cope with all the most difficult conditions that we may need to SUP paddle in, but at the same time glides as easily as possible in more stable conditions?

What we have also seen in recent years is the large increase in people who are looking for new challenges in their SUP paddling and now also want to compete in various exercise races, both nationally and internationally. Being able to use one and the same board for both lake and sea greatly simplifies the selection of suitable equipment, transport and storage.

For these reasons, we now wanted to develop a new type of SUP board that could handle all this - a combination board for all conditions, but optimized for the most difficult, including dynamic water and breaking waves. Here it is!

Kona Ocean Model 2
The Kona Ocean Model 2 is the starting point for our long-term investment in manufacturing within Europe.

• Made in Europe
• New stiff and extremely light construction (facilitates handling and downwind paddling)
• New more durable and lighter composite materials
• Unique design language - (better function in rough seas)
• Round to V-bottom - (optimized sliding ability in more conditions and for easier maneuvering and turning)
• Balanced volume - (increased buoyancy for paddling in warm, shallow and broken water)
• Volume in the stern - (easier to catch waves, stability when turning and when surfing)
• Increased buoyancy in the bow - (prevents diving)
• Round edges in the bow (easier to maneuver in side waves and drafting)
• Sharp edges in the stern (easier to maneuver in downwind and waves)
• Higher sidewalls - (reduced risk of overwash)
• Increased bottom curvature in the bow - (gets up over the waves more easily)
• Optimized placement of the fin box (facilitates maneuvering in waves)
• Newly developed fin
• New type of deck mat (for better control and low weight)
• Graphics of the future -

Balanced volume - The board's volume is balanced to provide increased buoyancy for paddling in warm, shallow and broken water. And to prevent the bow from diving in rougher seas. The volume in the stern provides stability when turning and when surfing. It's easier to catch waves.

Thoughtful bottom curvature – The bottom of the board goes from round to V-bottom for an optimized sliding ability in different conditions. It also makes the board easy to maneuver and handle in turns. An increased bottom curvature in the bow makes it easier for the board to get up over waves.

Edges for maneuverability – The edges of the board go from rounded in the bow to sharp edges in the stern. Round edges in the bow simplify the handling of the board in side waves and when drafting. The sharp edges in the stern make it easier to maneuver the board in downwind and waves.

Perforated deck mat – The deck mat's hole pattern/perforated structure provides good foothold and control over the board while reducing the overall weight of the board.

Downwind paddling – Downwind
Functional testing of the Ocean Model 2 also demonstrated its superb downwind (DW) paddling capabilities. The data showed that this was the absolute fastest SUP board we tested in strong tailwinds (>12 m/s) and meter-high swell. The feeling of the board shooting away when surfing a swell is outstanding - the Kona feeling

Recommendation

Recommendation

"Recommendation" means to whom and for which area of use the product is primarily adapted.
Usage:

Usage

"Usage" indicates the type of water environment (canal, lake, sea, etc.) and the type of SUP paddling (touring, training, competition, etc.) for which the product is primarily designed.
Racing
Weight of rider:

Weight of rider

By "paddler's weight" is meant the highest body weight of the user for which the equipment is primarily adapted.
< 90 kg
Technical data

Technical data

"Technical data" describes the product in detail and other information about the product. If a piece of information is missing, it is not relevant for this particular product.
Length:

Length

"Length" indicates the total length of the product. If the product is inflatable, the measurement indicates the length of the product in an inflated state with recommended pressure. Regarding adjustable products, the numbers show both the length of the product in its lowest collapsed position and in its fully extended position.
14'0", 4,27 m
Width:

Width

"Width" indicates the total width of the product, i.e. where the product is widest. If the product is inflatable, indicate the measurement where the product is at its widest when inflated with recommended pressure.
22,0", 55,9 cm
Volume:

Volume

"Volume" indicates how much air the SUP board contains (inflatable boards) or how big its foam core is (hard boards). This also gives an indication of the board's buoyancy and is in relation to the user's body weight. For this reason, it is important to choose a board that is adapted to the user.
263 L
Board weight:

Board weight

"Board weight" indicates the specific and total weight of the SUP board. Note! The manufacturing process means that minor weight differences may occur.
11.5 kg
Thickness:

Thickness

"Thickness" indicates how thick the product is where it is the thickest. Regarding SUP boards, the measurement refers to the height of a lying board, i.e. the greatest distance between the underside and the top.
23,7 cm
Fin box:

Fin box

"Fin box" refers to the type of fin attachment that the SUP board has. Generally there are two types; slide-in and US box. "Slide-in" means that fins are pushed into the fin box and locked with a pin. These are usually used for simpler board constructions. "US-box" means you can attach most fin models to that fin box by locking them with a screw and nut. Fins with a so-called click function can also be attached to these boxes. No screws or nuts are needed for these.
Tall US-box
Load weight:

Load weight

"Load weight" refers to the weight in kilograms that the SUP board can be loaded with in addition to the paddler himself and still be able to be paddled and maneuvered as intended. That this is not the same as the "paddler's weight" is due to the fact that the weight of the paddler is centered on a relatively small surface, while packs, children, dogs, etc. distribute the weight better.
50 kg
Test data

Test data

"Test data" refers to the specific values that the products generated when they underwent Kona Sports' rigorous functional testing on the water. Everything from acceleration to maneuverability is tested here. All models of Kona's SUP boards have undergone the same test battery and test procedure and thus their performance can be compared with each other. Here you can also see the differences in performance between different lengths and widths as well as between hard and inflatable SUP boards.
Stability value:Stable
Stability number:130
Glide number:

Glide number

"Glide number" indicates the SUP board's gliding ability, i.e. how far the board moves on average with each individual paddle stroke. This calculation is based on the four gears used in SUP and the different paddling frequencies/cadences that correspond to them. The higher the number, the farther or faster the board glides on average per paddle stroke.
