Numinous 14.0 Carbon
- "esteemed / non-human power"
If you are looking for a training and competition board for SUP that gives the feeling of never stopping sliding, the Kona Numinous 14.0 Carbon is just right for you. Kona Numinous is a distinct flat water machine with an exclusive displacement hull that silently cuts through the water with minimal resistance. Kona Numinous is the SUP board that minimizes the entry into SUP training and racing and is adapted to glide quickly and easily in the type of waters that most people will train and compete, i.e. lakes, canals and rivers.
High performance
Due to its long waterline and extremely low standing surface, Kona Numinous has unmatched stability and glide that allows you to convert all your power and energy to speed, regardless of level. Its balanced and optimal volume distribution means that you can easily handle both headwinds and crosswinds, as well as the tightest pivot turns. Numinous 14.0 Carbon comes with a hand-sharpened and optimally positioned fiberglass fin that contributes to the board's superb course stability. Numinous also has a bracket for front-mounted catch strap.
Designed for speed
Kona Numinous 14.0 Carbon is a SUP board that is designed for paddling in conditions where speed always costs power, i.e. to be able to paddle as fast as possible without the expected help of either wind, waves or currents. Where the value of each individual paddle stroke is higher than when paddling in more dynamic conditions. Here it is the total effect of all individual paddle strokes that determines the average speed.
Stability - Stability for Performance ™
To be able to paddle as efficiently as possible, i.e. relaxed and powerful, we need a board that we experience stable, ie. do not tip at the slightest impact. The stability we are talking about here is so-called secondary stability, i.e. how stable the board is experienced during speed. Unlike our so-called recreation and yoga boards that are designed to also lie still in the water, our training and competition boards are designed to be driven at all times. A stable SUP board like Kona Numinous also provides the opportunity for increased power transmission, that we can even more fall forward with the body during the catch without the board pitching, i.e. that the bow moves up and down.
Glide
What makes Numinous 14.0 Carbon has the best conditions for gliding as efficiently and effortlessly as possible in flat water, is its so-called displacement hull and low rocker. The nose on the Kona Numinous cuts the water surface no matter what angle it is at, which also contributes to its superb course stability. A rounded underside of the bow that gradually changes to a marked concave that runs all the way to the tail, makes Nouminous easier to release water and then also helps to make it easier to "steer" the board from the parallel position.
Displacement
Through our extensive testing, we see that a board such as Numinous with a displacement hull, benefits from paddling with a slightly larger power impulse and lower stroke rate / cadence (number of paddle strokes per minute) in relation to, for example, Kona Ocean which has a so-called planing hull. The idea with a SUP board like Kona Numinous is that it should glide as easily as possible through the water and thereby maintain speed longer before deceleration. It is important here that the nose is always right in the water so that it constantly splits the surface.
Low standing
Numinous 14.0 Carbon is carefully designed so that the standing surface is as close to the waterline as possible as this contributes to lowering the joint center of gravity of the paddler and the board. This in turn means that the board is not affected by how we move as much and we thereby get the opportunity to add more of our energy to driving muscles instead of compensating to counteract tipping, so-called involuntary rolling. Kona Numinous has also been volume-optimized to be able to paddle by people over 100 kg and has a well-balanced volume distribution with predominant volume in the nose and tail, which helps it to more easily keep speed and cut through the waves in choppy waters.
Width
To provide the conditions for as ergonomic a paddle stroke as possible, the board needs to be relatively narrow. To arrive at how we could increase the stability of a narrower SUP board like Kona Numinous, required extensive calculations in design and construction programs for hydrostatics / hydrodynamics and finally we managed to find ways to lower the standing surface without affecting the board's torsional rigidity and character.
Ergonomic paddle stroke
The fact that the standing surface is as close to the water surface as possible means that the united center of gravity (UCOG) of the board and the paddler is lowered. This means that Kona Numinous gets more support from the water and is therefore perceived as less nervous, the board does not "roll" as easily, i.e. wiggles from side to side. By being closer to the water, we also get a better control of the board and can thus more easily trim and control it by weight transfer. Together, this makes you now can choose a narrower board than you might have thought and thereby get a more ergonomic paddle stroke.
Volume
Kona Numinous is relatively low in volume in relation to industry standards as we have seen that too much volume gives both impaired acceleration ability, maneuverability and makes the board generally more awkward to handle.
Volume distribution
Numinous 14.0 Carbon is designed with the smallest possible volume in relation to the weight of the paddler it must be able to carry and the normal speed at which the board is intended to be paddled. Our extensive function and field tests on the water have shown that a balanced volume distribution is crucial for how the board will work in different conditions and how the board reacts to the different forces that the board is exposed to during paddling. To counteract pitching and to make the board as functional as possible, we have also increased the volume gradually towards the stern.
Custom volume
Due to its custom volume, the Kona Numinous 14.0 Carbon also has high stability even when the board is controlled from the stern, i.e. that there is sufficient buoyancy to carry the paddler even when he is standing in the stern during, for example, a pivot turn. The increased volume in the stern also makes it easier for the board to catch waves when, for example, downwind paddling.
The Kona feeling
Through all the years of testing of different brands, board models and prototypes that formed the basis for the development of e.g. Kona Numinous, it became more and more obvious to our entire development team that as soon as we stepped back on our own Kona boards, there was a special feeling, a feeling that we have come to call the "Kona feeling". A feeling that we now always strive to find first before we are ready to launch a new SUP model. We are also convinced that you too will understand what we mean when you test a Kona SUP board.
Course stability
Kona Numinous' carefully aligned channels on the underside of the hull and its sharp displacement nose contribute to direct foot control and course stability. Together with Kona's in-house developed and extra long and optimally placed fenbox, the Numinous 14.0 Carbon Hybrid offers superb adaptability. This allows you to place the fin exactly where you need it and get one of the most reactive boards on the market, i.e. that it always responds to your command and moves exactly where you want.
Design
For the design work, we have used the latest 3D technology for surface modeling, the same technology that is usually used in the automotive industry. Kona Numinous 14.0 Carbon hydrodynamically adapted shapes have been optimized through advanced computer programs for hydrostatic calculations together with data from function testing on the water. The underside of the hull is specifically designed to minimize water friction and to provide both increased course and secondary stability.
Friction
- Surface friction - Numinous wet surface is minimized by its displacement-shaped front and front portion.
- Wave formation - By carefully optimizing Numinous volume distribution and bottom curvature, we have succeeded in reducing larger pressure differences on the parts where natural pressure occurs when the board is driven through the water. In this way, the natural wave formation is also reduced.
- Shape friction - Numinous bottom has deep middle channels which i.a. contributes to the stability of the board and makes it more forgiving if it is edged by mistake. This means that we can also go down in width and choose a narrower board than we might have thought. In turn, this means that in addition to having a smaller hull to propel through the water, we can also get a more ergonomic paddle grip.
Construction
Like all our training and competition boards, the Kona Numinous 14.0 Carbon is built around a CNC-milled and extremely light EPS core that has been compressed and laminated withcarbon fiber fabric all around in a so-called heat casting process. Important here is the ratio between epoxy and carbon fiber fabric, which must be exactly right to be able to give the board maximum rigidity in relation to its weight. It is this advanced technology which, together with the board's unique design, gives the construction of the Kona boards its superior rigidity and response.
Deck
The deck on the Kona Numinous 14.0 Carbon has an EVA pad of the highest quality with so-called diamond structure to provide optimal grip and to facilitate circulation in the feet during long paddles. The deck pad is also immersed in the deck so that the board can maintain its extremely low standing surface.
Drainage
For efficient drainage, the Numinous 14.0 Carbon has been designed with two drainage holes. These are immersed in the sides of the board with a negative aft angle to prevent water from flowing back into the board. The elevated standing surface in the tail also contributes to water flowing more easily off the board and that the water that has been flushed over the edges can flow down towards and out through the drainage holes.
The fin
Numinous 14.0 comes with a 7-inch (175 mm) hand-cut fiberglass fin of the highest class. That it just exists made of fiberglass has a number of advantages such as that it e.g. gets the right flex and weight in relation to the board. The fin's design is optimized to provide course stability, maneuverability and minimal resistance in the water. The fend depth also offers a good balance between stability and maneuverability and works great for pivot turns even in shallow water. The fin also has a sufficiently long base (175 mm) in relation to the size of the board to provide the best possible course stability and acceleration. The fin angle of 51 ° degrees means that it easily slides through seagrass etc.
Fin box
The fin box on the Kona Numinous 14.0 Carbon is of the so-called US model with a total length of 10 inches (254 mm) which is considerably longer than what other manufacturers use. The fact that we have chosen to mount such a long box makes the board even more adaptable and possible for the paddler to adjust the position of the fin completely according to prevailing water conditions and individual paddling technique. We have also chosen to place the fenbox significantly further forward on the board than the market standard as we saw how important this was for the board's performance.
Surface layer
In order for the board to give an inspiring impression after many years of use, it also has a durable and protective surface layer that is strong enough to withstand light blows and shocks. The entire construction is sealed with four coats of paint of the same type used in the automotive industry.
Finish
The fact that Kona Numinous is also polished to a high gloss from the factory serves several purposes, one is that it glides faster in the water, another is that it absorbs less dirt and a third is that it can always be polished up to look new even after several years using.
Leash
Kona Numinous has two attachments for la eash based on what suits you and the conditions. One is mounted at the front of the deckpad and is most often used for training and competition. Another bracket is placed in the stern if, for example, you want to use a catch strap that is attached to the waist.
Fasteners
In the bow there is also a mount (FCS) for action cameras, so that you can, for example, film yourself for technical studies, etc. In front of the standing surface there are also four mounts to e.g. fitting an elastic packing system so that you can bring various necessities during the workout.
Carrying handle
The board is delivered with a carrying handle at the board's balance point in the middle of the deck, combined with an incut on each side of the inside of the stem for the possibility of stabilizing the board when it is to be carried in strong winds and in competitions with so-called beach start, i.e. where you start on land with board and paddle in your hands. The incuts allow you to stabilize the board with the hand you are not holding the handle with.
